Connect Laptop optical DVD drive externally by USB or eSATAp
This video will show you how to connect a laptop’s optical DVD drive externally through a USB port or eSATAp port. This is useful for laptop owners that have replaced their optical DVD drive with a 2nd HDD / SSD (drive caddy). The eSATAp port on Laptops does only provide 5V at 500mA (like USB). In my case, using the internal DVD drive of a Dell Latitude E6410 with a DeLock eSATAp->miniSATA, the power output does not suffice for reading/writing recordable CD/DVD media. The drive spins up a little and then aborts, spinning down again, in an endless loop. Using the eSATAp connector on my docking station with same laptop/drive/cable works perfectly. So no dock => no burning. An optional Y-cable would solve this problem.
