If u have a usb2 port, its better to have external DVD burner, u can use external DVD’s to your desktop pc also, but i think most of the laptop now comes with a usb2 port, not unless its an old laptop…

can a hd enclosure be used for a dvd drive?

i want to use my internal dvd burner as an external and need an enclosure. can i use a hard drive enclosure for that?

Yes you can (ive done this myself) the guts that make the external drive work are the same to make the optical drive work but it wont fit in the enclosure unless you buy one specifically for it. What i did was buy a cheap external case with power (wont be enough if its usb powered) removed the top cover and put the dvd sitting on the top and connected the two cables, put on top rather than removing as inside it gives you some protection from the live board inside if its only open to one side. You then attach usb and power and your away.

This isnt pretty and if you dont position it so you cant see the back is a bit dangerous as the guts are designed to be internal. But it works if your bothered you could get your mod on, hot glue the dvd to the case and a piece of plastic to cover the exposed board.

You will need 2 SATA cables and 2 SATA Power cables in order to make the connection and power up your components.
